Among the many unknown
treasures hidden in Genoa's palaces most peculiar are the tiles imported
from Spain, testifying the links between Genoa and other Mediterranean
cultures
The relief tiles decorating
the interiors of Genoa's palaces were called laggioni, from the
Arab word al zuleja (meaning little square tile) that
became in Spanishazulejo.
Of all towns in Italy, Genoa
only has such a large collection of such tiles, well preserved in their
original location.
Fortunately the tiles have
resisted until now because few people know about their value, and are
not so much appreciated in the collector's markets.
Other towns well renowned for
their tiles, such as Lisbon or Valencia, keep them in their museums
If you want to know more about
Moorish-style relief tiles of the 16th Century,
I have written a short history that can be downloaded
